Holiday Traditions: Throw a First Snow Party (and a giveaway!)
We recently had our first snow of the season! And wow, it was a beautiful one. It was the kind of snow where it sticks to the trees and comes down in big, fluffy flakes. It looked like we were living in a giant snow globe! It was also the kind where you didn’t really have to shovel, hehe. The kids had a blast playing in it. Since this is our first full winter in our new home, they were over the moon to sled down our hill and traipse through the snow-covered woods. There’s something magical about the first snow (I know Lorelei Gilmore would agree with me on this), so we like to celebrate by throwing a First Snow Party!
I love holiday traditions, and since becoming a mom, that’s something I’ve really enjoyed sharing with my boys. I can tell they love having things to look forward to year after year. Plus, traditions like this are just FUN!
We pull out all the stops for our First Snow party: holiday treats like ice cream, cookies, egg nog, hot chocolate with homemade whipped cream (or a peppermint mocha for mom!), and some popcorn thrown in for a salty fix. ;)
There’s also something so special about holiday foods, and Kemps Candy Cane Ice Cream, Peppermint Bark Moose Tracks, Egg Nog are perfect for this tradition. I think they almost taste even better because you know that you’re not going to be able to eat it year-round.
My boys seriously went nuts for the Kemps Candy Cane Ice Cream, but the Peppermint Bark Moose Tracks was my fave. They kept thanking me over and over for the special treats. You know something is a hit when they are literally licking the bowl!
I also discovered that my boys had never had Egg Nog before. What?! Don’t worry, that’s been corrected. It went over like gangbusters, in case you were wondering.

I just love the holidays!! Sharing these traditions with my family is such a blessing, and I’m so excited for all the memories we’ll make this year, our first Christmas in our new (old) farmhouse and our first Christmas with our new baby.

On Christmas eve, we have a big, indulgent buffet that everyone contributes to. Afterwards we pop in The Muppets Christmas Carol & exchange gifts. I should mention that my youngest is 28 :-D

We get in our pjs on Christmas Eve, drink cocoa and watch A Charlie Brown Christmas and that is what we will be doing this year as well!

We always get a family game that we play on Christmas Eve. It’s also for adding to our collection of games to choose from during our NYE game night! :)
One of my favorite traditions we started 3 years ago, was our elf….brings a box of individually wrapped books on December 1st with instructions he gets to open one book each night for bedtime story. When the books are gone…its Christmas! We have so much fun opening one each night and having a new story to read. We look forward to it every year…and I search garage sales and goodwill for books in great shape all year that I can use!

We make sugar cookie cut-outs and the kids decorate them/ That has become as much of a tradition in our home as carving pumpkins or decorating eggs.

How fun to celebrate the first big snow!! That’ll be a fun memory for your family!
Our traditions are continuing to morph as our children are both down married and we have a new grandbaby in the mix. But somethings are just not up for changing, like having artichokes for Christmas Eve brunch with our immediate family. Also my husband’s family has been enjoying Bagna Cauda for as long as we’ve been together. It’s a creamy, buttery, garlicky sauce that served hot {think fondue} and you dip raw veggies {cabbage, peppers, celery, broccoli, etc.} and use bread for drip control on the way to your mouth. It’s delicious and something we only have at Christmas, which makes it so special!
In Alabama, we rarely get a first snow. But we could throw a “wish it would snow” party! Sounds like fun!!
Aww, your kiddos are precious! I am all about peppermint bark, so we’ll have to give Kemp’s a try.
We are still forming our family traditions as a family of three. I have loved reading other ideas to construct something that is perfect for our family.
We gather with family on Christmas Eve for dinner, reading of the Christmas Story, singing of carols and some gifts. Christmas morning usually includes a leisurely sweet breakfast followed by lunch with more family, a theme inspired contest of dress and a fun dollar gift game. (The peppermint ice cream sounds so go I’d! )
Christmas Eve church service is my favorite holiday tradition, followed closely by cinnamon rolls Christmas morning!
We don’t really have any big traditions. We love spending time with our loved ones and creating memories for our kid’s! We are looking to form new traditions this year, so I am excited! Kemp’s just might be added to the list.
We have a felt Christmas calendar that is a tree and each day my daughters get to put one ornament on it as a count down to Christmas. They love filling it up with ornaments. This year my oldest daughter, who is a kindergartener, decided we should write Christmas cards to each other and put them in the stockings, I think that is a great tradition to start!
We bake cookies and decorate with my daughter and grandchildren. I mean lots of cookies. 15 lbs of butter wort of cookies.
With my children and now my grand children, we love spending several afternoons making Christmas ornaments for the tree.
I’m a big tradition person too. :) We bake cut-out cookies at Thanksgiving and my mom saves them for Christmas, we have a tree decorating party with treats, we do Advent readings and chocolate every night after dinner, my sister comes over for a cookie making day, we have a stack of books that only come out at Christmas, Mary and Joseph and their donkey appear in a different spot in the house every morning as they travel toward the rest of the nativity set in “Bethlehem” and the kids have to find them, we try to attend a Living Nativity somewhere every year, we do Christmas crackers at Christmas dinner…
Making gingerbread boys with the grandkids! Hubby and I hide the gingers when they go to bed and then they get to tear the house apart looking for them. It was quite fun when they were little, but they know better now!! Happy Holidays……… nettiecrain@live.com
I love baking with my children. We go out and cut our Christmas tree together. Holiday sewing is another favorite along with making beaded Christmas spiders. Each person in the family has their own spider.
