What if you homeschooled without any curriculum at all?
Now stick with me… I’m not suggesting that you should throw out all the curriculum. But just think through it with me for a minute.
Maybe you get in a financial spot where you can’t afford to buy a curriculum.
Maybe you move to a country where shipping is insane and it’s a huge hassle to get curriculum shipped to your house.
Maybe you’re just sick of buying curriculum that your kids hate!
If you took away all the curriculum, your kids would still learn. Think of all the learning opportunities there are during the day:
- Building
- Baking
- Arts and crafts
- Reading
- Nature journaling
- Letter writing
- Skills like sewing, knitting, etc.
- Gardening
- Coding and website building
- Board games

Here’s the beauty of homeschooling: you might not ever ditch the curriculum altogether, but you are certainly going to have times when life throws you a curve ball and you have to set your homeschool aside. Like when there’s a death in your family, you have a new baby, or you’re sick for two weeks.
Taking a break from curriculum doesn’t mean that you take a break from learning. Your kids are always learning, regardless of whether or not it’s from a curriculum or a workbook or a structured lesson.
So maybe you don’t go completely rogue on your curriculum or decide to unschool, but when the unexpected comes, you don’t have to stress that your kids aren’t learning. You can relax and lean into a season of natural learning – whether it’s a few days, a few weeks, or even a few months.
