CYH: How NOT to start the new year

It’s so tempting to start the new year with big, splashy goals, and tackling new challenges. I’ve been there – and I’m tempted to do it again.

But this year I’m trying something different.

Instead of starting the new year with big, audacious goals and a new homeschool plan, I’m starting the year slowly.

Animals hibernate and scurry away to keep warm during the winter. Plants go dormant and have a period of rest. Farmers put their fields to bed and dig into their stocked pantry shelves, depending on the hard work of their harvest. Why do we choose this time of year to ramp it up and make a big push for new, bigger, and better? It seems to go against the way the Father ordained creation and seasons.

I don’t know that this way of doing things serves us well.

I’m going to take stock of the things that aren’t going well, the things that might need a shift, and where we need a reset. I think these things are always wise to do every so often, and the new year can be a good time to do that.

But I’m not challenging myself to make big changes, tackle huge projects, or overhaul our whole routine.

Instead, I’m sticking with the idea that slow and steady wins the race.

I’m choosing to lean into the things that are doing well and what brings our family joy.

I’m not giving in to the pressure of resolutions and challenges, but leaning into a place of peace.

I want my heart to be focused on the purpose, rather than the process.
