Whether you’re schooling through the summer or not, reading is something that shouldn’t take a summer break. These books are perfect for reading in the summer with your kids! They aren’t all books that are written about summer, but each of them has something that feels fitting to me to read in the summertime.
Thundercake by Patricia Polacco – great to read when there’s a summer storm, and then make a cake together like in the book!
The Raft by Jim LaMarche – a summer at grandma’s house in the Wisconsin woods goes from boring to an imaginative adventure
North Woods Girl by Aimee Bissonette – spend time with Grandma in her north woods home
Lucy’s Summer by Donald Hall – head back to 1910 to spend the summer with Lucy *this one you’ll most likely have to find at the library; it’s out of print and can be expensive to buy used
The Hike by Alison Farrell – a story about exploring nature in your own backyard
Sunflower House by Eve Bunting – plant your own sunflower house like these kiddos!
A Walk in the Forest by Maria Dek – what can you see, find, or do in the forest?
The Planet in a Pickle Jar by Martin Stanev – two kiddos visit their grandmother and realize the treasures she has in store
The Vegetables We Eat by Gail Gibbons – get up close and personal with the veggies that grow in your garden or the farms around you
The Moonflower by Peter Loewer – read about the unique moonflower and the other creatures that come out at night
Finding Wild by Megan Wagner Lloyd – a fun story about adventuring and finding nature in the everyday
A Little More Beautiful by Sarah Mackenzie – a wonderful story of the garden, written by Sarah Mckenzie of Read Aloud Revival
