For the most part, I’m not a fan of taking pharmaceuticals. I avoid them whenever I can, and prefer to use natural solutions as much as possible. In the 12+ years that I’ve called myself a “crunchy mom,” I’ve tried a looooot of different natural remedies. This list has all of my favorite remedies that have worked for my family. *This is not medical advice, of course, I’m just sharing what has worked for our family.*

Water with electrolytes

The first thing I always do (or have my kids do) for a headache is water with electrolytes. Dehydration is a huge factor in headaches!

Tinctures

Magnesium

If my kids have a headache, I always say “drink water and take a magnesium.” We use these chewable magnesium tablets for sleep, but they definitely help with headaches also.

Ningxia Red

Ningxia Red is a drink that’s high in anti-oxidants and is nutrient dense, so I find that if we are drinking this regularly, we stay healthier all around, including fewer headaches. It helps us stay hydrated and is perfect for hiding tinctures in. ;)

Sleep

Don’t underestimate the power of sleep! If I have a terrible headache at night, usually I just take a tincture and then go to bed early. I usually wake up headache free!

Zok

This one seems like a super weird tool… and honestly, it kind of is. But I purchased it on a whim, and then after I had a hormonal migraine for three days, I tried it out of desperation. And to my surprise, my headache was gone within FIFTEEN MINUTES. I was seriously floored.

Essential oils

Essential oils have helped my family tremendously over the years. These are the oils we like for headaches:

Arnica Salve

This falls under the category of “things I always have in my purse, so I’ll use it in a pinch.” It isn’t my go-to for headaches, but I think it can help a mild headache. I get mine from Earthley. You can also DIY your own salve with essential oils using this easy recipe.

Balancing hormones

For myself, I tend to get hormonal headaches along with my cycle. So if my hormones are balanced, I don’t get them nearly as often.
