Keeping natural remedies on hand is one of the best ways to keep your family healthy and out of the doctor’s office. We’ve handled many minor burns at home with combinations of these home remedies.
Disclaimer: this is not medical advice – this is just what we do in our home. Seek medical help for any burn that is serious and you can’t treat at home.
1. Manuka honey
This is my first go-to for any burn. It’s cooling and has so many incredible healing properties. Simply cover the burn with honey (you can also cover with a bandage to keep the mess down). It will help take away the immediate pain and help to speed up the healing process.
2. Plantain
This is an amazing remedy that you probably have in your yard – especially in summer. (If you’re reading this in summer/fall, now is the perfect time to harvest plantain and turn it into a salve for later.)
- Poultice – this is the easiest way; you basically just chew up a plantain leaf and put it directly on your burn
- Salve – you can use dried plantain leaves to make a salve; you can use this dandelion salve recipe as a guide, as the process is the same
3. Essential oils
- Lavender – I usually try to put lavender oil on immediately with manuka honey
- Helichrysum – this oil is great for pain and skin healing (I particularly like this owie oil blend)
- Frankincense – good to heal skin and prevent scarring
4. Cooling spray
An essential oil cooling spray can really help with the pain of a burn. I have this after sun spray recipe that I use for sunburns. You can choose to leave out the peppermint for a household burn.
5. Aloe
Many people like to use aloe on burns. Only use this if you are sure you’re using only 100% aloe – many creams and gels say aloe, but they actually have additives that aren’t good for your family’s skin.
Bonus tip:
Sometimes just covering with a bandage can help! It can keep your burn cool and protect it from anything bumping into it. So even though this isn’t a “remedy,” it’s helpful!
