As the temperature drops, I want nothing more than to create hygge spaces. If you’re not familiar with the concept of hygge, it’s a Danish word that means creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people.
Cozy blankets
This one feels like a given, but having blankets to snuggle up with on the couch can instantly transform a space from a cold room to a warm, cozy space.
I love to find handmade blankets at thrift stores or rummage sales. People are always donating crocheted blankets or quilts, so our blanket basket is filled with them. We got a stack of handmade quilts and blankets from a neighbor’s garage sale, and I love the vibe they bring to our living room! They’re perfect for pulling out on family movie nights or to cuddle under when reading on the couch.
Diffusers and candles
Beeswax candles and diffusers can fill the room with lovely scents that can put you in the mood to cozy up in a big chair with a cup of coffee. I personally am NOT a fan of candles with artificial scents and ingredients. There are too many negative affects on health when burning candles. Beeswax candles are a great option, though, and a great handicraft to do with your kiddos.
Warm drinks
A big mug of a warm cup of hot apple cider or a peppermint mocha in your hands might just be the ultimate way to cozy up on the couch! Or a soothe your throat tea for those days when you’re under the weather.
Fireside
If you’re lucky enough to have a wood stove or a fireplace, light it up and let it set the cozy mood!
Textures
Besides cozy blankets, you can pull other textures into the room that help give it a cozy, hygge feel.
For me, this looks like:
- baskets or tapestries on the wall
- natural elements like sticks, rocks, shells
- pillows
- plants
- rugs
Wool socks and sweaters
To me, cold weather means wool socks and sweaters. Feeling warm when it’s cold outside is just glorious for me. It can change my whole mood if I’m too cold in the winter! I really like to thrift sweaters, and it’s such an affordable way to find cozy wool sweaters.
Books and Games
Books and games (like a chessboard) invite people to sit and stay awhile! I love to have baskets of books or magazines around the living room or in cozy seating spaces so that it’s so easy to cuddle up with a book.
Lights
Set the cozy mood with hygge lighting!
- twinkle lights
- battery operated candles that “flicker”
- beeswax candles
- dim lamps
- fire in the fireplace or wood stove
