Chapter Books about Elections
As our kids get older, so many parents and teachers tend to turn away from books in favor of curriculum and lessons. However, I’m a firm believer that books can be the basis of your curriculum! Chapter books are a great way for kids to learn topics and go deeper on their own or to use as a read aloud together. I’ve gathered up some of the most engaging chapter books about elections, government, and Presidents so you can use them in your own home and learning.

You can read these books leading up to and during the election time, or you can read them anytime of the year when your family is studying the U.S. government and elections.
Engaging Chapter Books About Elections, Presidents, and Government
Action Presidents series
The Action Presidents books are a fun series about U.S. Presidents that’s incredibly engaging. These books are written in a graphic novel style, so they are especially appealing to kids who don’t love reading. They relay the information in a super fun way, without feeling at all like learning.
Who Was/What is series
The Who Was series has books about U.S. Presidents, and the What is series has books about the White House, Supreme Court, and Congress.
They’re easy to read and the information is easy to understand. But while these books are engaging and have good information, I don’t really put them in the category of good quality literature. Does that mean we don’t use them? No! We definitely have many of these books on our shelves about many different topics.
While we do like this series, I personally would not use these as the only books I use when teaching kids about a topic, unless they just want to casually read about a random person or place.
History Smashers
History Smashers is a great series – another easy to read chapter book that’s very informative and engaging for kids. This series doesn’t have a lot of books specifically about Presidents or elections – the Votes for Women book is very specific to election rights – however, since many of the books are about historical events like the Revolutionary War, Pearl Harbor, and the Civil War, they obviously talk about specific Presidents and their roles in these events.
Show Me History
The Show Me History series (not pictured) is another one that’s written in graphic novel style. They have books on a few specific U.S. Presidents and Susan B. Anthony (voting rights).
I’m also a huge fan of using picture books for all ages, so even if your kiddos are already reading chapter books, don’t forget to include picture books in your learning and/or lessons!
So make sure you check out this post about picture books to study elections:
Good books lead to great discussions, and these books can lead your kids through great conversations about how elections work, what it’s like to run for President, and how someone becomes the President of the United States.
But sometimes, you need some guidance in knowing how to use those books to guide the conversation. That’s where the U.S. Government and Elections Unit Study comes in!
Within the U.S. Government and Elections Unit Study, you’ll find an extensive book list with even more of our favorite picture and chapter books about elections, along with a guide for using them. This guide is perfect for family style learning, with extensions and book lists for middle and high school.
