How to Start Homeschooling

how to start homeschooling

If you want to know how to start homeschooling, you’re in the right place!

Hi, I’m Jess!

I’m a former elementary teacher turned homeschooling mom of five, ages 15 to 6. I love helping other mamas learn how to start homeschooling, find freedom in home education, get the resources they need, and enjoy learning alongside their children!

Why homeschool?

Why do you want to homeschool? There could be one big reason – like you want a faith-based education, time to travel as a family, or your child was bullied at school – or there could be many small reasons. There isn’t a wrong reason to start homeschooling! Whatever reason you choose to begin, homeschooling can be tailored to your unique family. Your homeschool doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s, and it certainly doesn’t need to look anything like school.

This video covers some reasons you might want to quit the public school system:

Homeschool laws

It’s important to know the homeschool laws of your specific state or region. If you live in the United States, the best resource is the HSLDA.

Building the Foundation

Most people think that the foundation of their homeschool is the curriculum they choose. They form their schedules and days around the curriculum. But you’re not in a school and a classroom – you’re in a HOME and a FAMILY.

Don’t build your life around your curriculum… build your curriculum around your life. There’s so much more to homeschooling than the curriculum you choose. Curriculum is just one piece of a home education (and you could even choose to homeschool without it!). It’s not the place to begin!

This FREE workshop will show you how to build your homeschool on the right foundation:

Detach Education from School

Our society is centered around school, and most of us have been shaped by what the system has told us is the “right” way to learn. When we choose home education, we end up bringing the system right into our homes. This is why it’s so important to remember that education is not the same as school. Homeschool can look SO much different than learning in the classroom. We can leave the system mindset behind and find a better way for our kids. One that doesn’t need to check boxes or meet timelines.

Curriculum

It can be overwhelming to think about choosing curriculum. Here’s the important thing to remember: the curriculum you choose won’t make or break your homeschool. So don’t stress too much about it! You can easily change it, and you very likely will change it as you become more comfortable with how your kids learn best and what methods work well for your family!
