St Patrick’s Day Activities
I love to incorporate fun little unit studies and on holidays, and these St. Patrick’s Day activities are the perfect way to celebrate, even if you don’t have any Irish in your ancestry. Whether you use these activities for your homeschool or just a family fun night, there are a lot of different ways to learn and celebrate at the same time!

St Patrick’s Day activities for your homeschool
You don’t need to put together a full-fledged unit study about Ireland or St. Patrick’s Day, but you can easily pull together a few activities to learn about Irish history and culture.
Books
These are some of our favorite books to read for St. Patrick’s Day:
- St. Patrick and the Peddler by Margaret Hodges
- Patrick Saint of Ireland by Diana Mayo
- Patrick Patron Saint of Ireland by Tomie de Paola
- Patrick: God’s Courageous Captive by Voice of the Martyrs
- St. Patrick’s Day by Gail Gibbons
These books are great to get a look into Irish history and culture:
- James O’Rourke and the Big Potato by Tomie de Paola (this book is FUN!)
- Irish Legends for Children
- Tales from Old Ireland (mine came with an audiobook version you can listen to!)
- This is Ireland by Miroslav Sasek
- Festivals of the World Ireland by Patricia McKay
This research and notebooking bundle is perfect for helping your kiddos gather up information they read in the books or watch in the videos.
Printable Coloring Page
Color this traditional Irish blessing while you’re watching a video about St. Patrick or reading aloud.
Videos
We watched this video about the history of St. Patrick last year, and it was fantastic! It also gives a great peek into Ireland – the landscape, the food, buildings, etc. This video is almost an hour long, but was very engaging for my kids.
This video is a short one that gives the story of St. Patrick:
Map Work
- Find Ireland in an atlas (find a list of our faves in my Amazon storefront) or on a globe
- Print or draw a map of Ireland
- Watercolor the map – I like this tutorial for watercolor painting maps.
Food
Try cooking some traditional Irish recipes like corned beef and cabbage, Irish soda bread, or shepherd’s pie.
Bake some shamrock cinnamon rolls.
I don’t think there’s anything traditionally Irish about a mint milkshake ;) but it sure is fun to have on St. Patrick’s Day!
